Are You Healthy? I am here to prove your idea and knowledge wrong. Here I am describing What’s the actual meaning of being healthy and Concepts of health?

What is health

What do you think, Health is being free from disease or health means being strong. No, Health is a completely different concept and its sure that it’s out of your syllabus.

There are many organization who defines health but we all are following WHO(world health organization) definition of health. So, we will see health according to WHO in this article.

WHO Definition of Health

In 1948 WHO defines health as

” A state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely absence of disease or infirmity.”

According to this definition, no one seems to be healthy in this world. Because someone may be physically fit but not mentally or socially.

That means according to WHO all old aged people are unhealthy because they are not physically fit and their stress coping mechanism is very less, and they struggle to adjust socially. Then what about children? Are they Healthy?

What about a handicapped person, will he or she remain unhealthy till death? That’s why health should be defined individually and should prioritize individual condition, otherwise, a completely healthy western people will be defined as socially unhealthy in Indian culture.

In 1986 the WHO again clarified Health

“A resource for everyday life, not the objective of living. Health is a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capacities.”

It means health is not just a goal for living, it’s like a recourse which helps an individual to lead a socially and economically productive life.

The above definition seems good than the previous one, but we are still following the old one. If we mix these two definitions then the actual meaning of health comes out.

The simple meaning of Health

I think health may the ability to adapt and manage physical, mental and social challenges. In which every individual realizes his own potential, and can lead a socially and economically productive life.

A person should have the potential to adjust in every situation of life and have the ability or trying to gain that ability to survive in a critical situation of life with mental and social stability.

It is the traditional theory of Health. Traditionally health is known as the absence of disease, Means they were thinking that only Germs can make us unhealthy.

Microorganisms(Germs) > Human Body > Disease/ illness

There are many other factors which can also affect health like environmental pollution, Food, etc. So, this concept was proved wrong

2. Ecological concept

This concept view health is an equilibrium between the environment and the human body. Any maladjustment between human and environment can cause disease.

According to the ecological concept, Disease can be caused by

But, there are many internal factors also cause disease like Genetic factor, hormonal imbalance, etc.
